An interesting article about the “true commercialization of Christmas.”
I think the article writer is missing a rather important point. If I, as a Christian, and as a retail employee, want to say “Merry Christmas” to a customer, I should have the right, as a citizen of the US, to do so– First Ammendment and all that. Generally what occurs is that the store owners set policies that prevent employees from doing that, as part and parcel of the whole holidays/Christmas appelation policy. For me, it has little at all to do with commercialism, and a lot to do with my right to worship or express my belief as I see fit, and to allow others to do the same.
Course, there is the tangential point that calling it a ‘holiday tree’ is just stupid as no other holiday celebrations use an evergreen tree. 😉
I think the article writer is missing a rather important point.
I don’t think he is “missing the point”, but rather, introducing one that is quite seriously overlooked. Sure, as US citizens, we have the “right” to wish anyone a Merry Christmas, as much as a “go to Hell” or any number of a few more colorful coloquialisms, and that point has been trooped out quite a bit recently in light of the latest silliness.
But the point he is making is one I don’t hear as often, and it is one that applies to a much broader realm than just the holiday season. It speaks about a Christian’s attitude, even in the face of injustice, and unfairness.
And he also brings up some salient points that I attemptd to make in my last post. 😉 Seemed timely and topical.
I didn’t say missing THE point, just one particular facet of the issue when I said missing an important point. =)
