All I want for Christmas…

October 31, 2008 § 10 Comments

On a forum I belong to, a mom recently posted the following:

I wanted to get some ideas what large families get their kids and also how you budget.

We have our 4 kids. They are 7 and under. We have gobs of toys and I am feeling like there is nothing left to buy them! For the two littlest one, I have all the toys left over from my two biggests ones, and they have plenty.

I know kids don’t want just clothes for Christmas (although they’ll be getting some for sure). I know I’m going to get some DVDs, maybe a few video games for their Click Start computer thing, or some computer games.

But what do you get when you have practically everything! UGH!!

Every single response that followed addressed the poster quite literally– advising about what kinds of toys etc. One even talked about getting a Wii! I was like, SRSLY?? Not that I have anything against Wii’s, but I mean, really?

So I responded:

My take on Christmas gift giving.

Well, it took me three days…

but i finally finished it: I tagged all of my lj entries, going back to the start of this lj. It was rather interesting, watching my relationship with Matt blossom and develop– backwards! I also was able to reminisce over memories of Rit, koinegeek and found his last comment to my journal in the process. It was to some random meme. It made my heart stop when i realized that the last time he replied to my journal, i hadn’t replied back. I miss him, he was such a blessing and a good friend, even if we never met in person. What a man of God!

So, 2007 is off to a start, and i have much to update. Christmas was good, but i have come to the conclusion that i really dislike Christmas Day itself, much as I adore the season leading up to it. Matt and I exchanged gifts on Christmas Eve. I got lots of dragonfly stuff. Pretty! Christmas Day was an exercise in frustration however, with three family stops across two states, and irritations from both sets of parents. But what can you expect? lol, such is family.

I have been slowly re-organizing the house, and re-arranging. We went out and bought an upright freezer the other day, and had it delivered on Tuesday, so now we can actually keep a stock of food. I felt like such a grown-up with that purchase.

Yeah, I’ve been all kinds of Christmassy since Nov 1. Or earlier. Matt bought Mercy Me’s Christmas CD a couple of days before Halloween. We had an early start.

I love Christmas music. I began collecting tapes and cds when I worked for the Deb Shop back in high school. We had 1 (one) tape to play over the holidays and it had to be played from mid November to Christmas. Suffice it to say, we got pretty sick of the same tape played on a loop. So it became a daily ritual for one of us to run upstairs and buy new Christmas tapes at Sam Goody. We amassed quite a collection before long.

And an obsession was born.

I’m much better these days, but my MAC has about 4 days worth of Christmas music on it, and that doesn’t count all the stuff I have on tapes. Like my Bob Rivers collection, and all my Christmas Comedy tapes. After 9/11, I have found, tho, that I can no longer play Weird Al’s “Christmas at Ground Zero.” Apparently, it has bad connotations for some folks.

Ok, I am SOOO ready for classes to be done. bleh.

What’s a partridge? What’s a pear tree?
